My baby, born on Dec 6, 2020, has beautiful (touch wood) but sensitive skin, that is more on the dry side. In the first month after his birth, we saw some dry patches on his skin and this drove us to the pediatrician as we suspected eczema, etc. She recommended first trying some thick moisturizers such as Aveeno, CeraVe and trying hydrocortisone 1% (a steroid ointment available OTC) if the moisturizers didn't help. This event led me to do a lot of online research and the general guidance was to avoid any scented products on baby skin. I also went through the ingredients of the pediatrician recommended brands such as Aveeno and CeraVe. I also read a lot about using oils to massage baby skin and which oils were to be used. I also watched some Youtube videos from pediatric dermatologists and Aquaphor brand also came out highly recommended. There was also a brief period when my baby suffered from Diaper rash in the first month after birth. We took the doctor's advice and used Desitin (Purple) to cure the diaper rash. After all the research and consultations with the pediatrician, I settled on the following skincare products/regime for my baby and it has served him really well. There have been no skin issues for my baby since the first month and I do credit most of this good fortune to the products/regime enlisted below. I hope and pray that my baby's skin continues to remain problem-free.
Face
I wash his face twice a day with plain warm water and apply CeraVe baby cream. While the main ingredient in CeraVe is the same as in Aveeno, the former has some additional ceramides which are often praised by many doctors. After feedings, I clean his face with a wet washcloth. If I notice any dryness, then I apply Aquaphor healing ointment as a spot treatment (around the mouth area). Aquaphor is truly my go-to healing ointment for baby skin. If I see a dry patch developing on baby skin, I just apply CeraVe and then coat it with Aquaphor twice a day and this fixes the dry patch issue. I apply the Aveeno Baby body wash (listed in Body section) on his face only 1-2 times a week as applying soap on baby face daily may cause it to become very dry.
Body
I use the Aveeno Baby lightly scented body wash and shampoo, but I don't apply soap on his whole body every day as that would just dry up his dry skin even more. I, however, wash the diaper area and skin folds daily with this body wash. After every shower, I apply virgin coconut oil to his entire body as a moisturizer. The antibacterial properties of coconut oil are especially helpful for the diaper area. If there is any dry spot, I coat it with Aquaphor. We also use Aquaphor often during diaper changes as a preventive measure against diaper rash.
Hair
Once a week, we apply coconut oil to my baby's beautiful hair and then shampoo it with the aforementioned Aveeno Baby Wash and Shampoo. I don't wash his head more often to avoid getting head cold. This will of course change as he grows up. But since babies don't really get that dirty, this has been enough to maintain a clean scalp and have healthy hair.
Note: In another blog, I enlist products for baby's diapering needs
